Cut the power to the water heater.
There will be some leakage when the inlet pipe is disconnected so have rags or sponges ready to remove it.
The cold water inlet nipple has a dip tube attached to it inside the water tank.
If the dip tube is missing the cold incoming water mixes with the hot water at the top of the tank and you wind up feeding the house with tepid instead of hot water.
Disconnect the cold water supply line at the top of the water heater.
Turn the cold water inlet valve off.
Pull the nipple and the original dip tube from the water heater.

Turn the nipple clockwise to loosen it.
Disconnect the cold water inlet pipe.
Attach the pipe wrench to the nipple sticking out of the water heater.
On some units this can be done with a pipe wrench but most older models may require you to cut the pipe or tubing feeding the unit with a tubing cutter.
Remove the dip tube.
The water for faucets and appliances comes from the hot layer on top.
Youll need to break out a wrench for this step.

Remove the nipple to expose the top of the dip tube.
